BREATHAIR® is 3D network structured fiber material that rubber-elastic polyether ester elastomer fibers are connected into three-dimensional direction with large numbers of loops.
Since BREATHAIR® is launched in 1996, TOYOBO MC has been reformed cushion market.
BREATHAIR® has the feature of high resilience.
BREATHAIR® has superior body pressure distribution.
BREATHAIR® is superior in durability and heat resistance to densified polyester fiber and polyethylene imitation. It realizes "D1-class" which is the highest level in JIS L 4500 endurance category.
BREATHAIR® is highly breathable compared to general polyurethane foams.
BREATHAIR® is washable by water because it does not keep much water in the structure. It can be dry quickly even after getting wet.
BREATHAIR® has a hollow fiber type and a solid fiber type. Hollowing the fiber makes it possible to reduce weight while maintaining hardness.
BREATHAIR® can be applied to material recycling, because it is made from thermoplastic elastomer.
BREATHAIR® has specific compression recovery properties different from other cushion materials.
In applying pressure, individual loops are deformed in the thickness direction, then the deformation stress is distributed in three-dimensional direction through joints of the loops.
In releasing pressure, the deformed loops recover quickly to their original shape by the rubber elasticity of polyether ester elastomer fibers.
BREATHAIR® shows excellent body pressure distribution by its specific compression recovery properties.
The below is an example of body pressure distribution test that a mattress using BREATHAIR® is evaluated. A mattress using BREATHAIR® has superior body pressure distribution compared to a mattress using polyester fiber, as you can see its wider contact area and lower pressure on whole body.
Mattress using BREATHAIR®
General mattress using a polyurethane foam
General mattress using a densified polyester fiber
*Testee: 171cm height, 64kg weight
BREATHAIR® is highly resilient due to its quick compression recovery. They are classified as "highly resilient" in JIS L 4500 (except some products).
This high resilience brings the advantages such that makes mattress easier to turn over on, and that makes seating easier to stand up from.

BREATHAIR® contains lots of pore space between the interconnected loops. This structure provides high air permeability superior to general polyurethane foams or general densified polyester fiber.
The high breathability of BREATHAIR® controls increases in temperature and humidity of the space between sweating human body and a product. Thus, BREATHAIR® provides comfortable bedding microclimate, by reducing stress from heat and stuffiness.
The following graph shows an evaluation test example of temperature and humidity in bedding for a mattress using BREATHAIR®. Compared to mattresses using general polyurethane foam or general densified polyester fiber, the mattress using BREATHAIR® controls increase in temperature and humidity between sweating human body and the mattress.

TOYOBO are very particular about raw material of BREATHAIR® to get higher quality. BREATHAIR® is made from an engineering elastomer "PELPRENE" that has both rubber and engineering plastic properties. “PELPRENE” is used in automotive parts that require durability and heat resistance. For more detail, click here about the introduction of “PELPRENE”.
By using an engineering elastomer "PELPRENE," BREATHAIR® is superior in durability and heat resistance to polyethylene imitation and densified polyester fiber. BREATHAIR® achieves "D1-Class" which is the highest level in durability category of JIS L 4500.
Results of compression set test
Durability test in which the sample is kept compressed to 50% of its initial thickness and heated at 70°C for 22 hours.
BREATHAIR® made from PELPRENE®, which has excellent heat resistance, exhibits less change in thickness and is superior in durability compared to general polyethylene imitation.
BREATHAIR® has a hollow fiber type and a solid fiber type. Changing the solid fiber type to the hollow fiber type, it is possible to reduce sheet weight of BREATHAIR® while maintaining hardness.

BREATHAIR® can be applied to material recycling, because it is made from thermoplastic elastomer. TOYOBO have already established “BREATHAIR® recycling technology" which is to reuse offcuts and off-grade products generated in its production process as raw materials for BREATHAIR®. We are working to reduce plastic emissions through this action.
Furthermore, we are currently aiming to develop commercialization of BREATHAIR® post-consumer recycling, which use end-of-life its products as raw materials for BREATHAIR®.
